3 Reasons For A Dental Implant Placement

Dental implants are prosthetic teeth. You may have heard of them, but you may not have an understanding of how they are usually used. Here are a few reasons for a dental implant placement:

A Single Tooth Replacement

A dental implant can be used to replace a single loss tooth. The implant, which is a metal rod or screw, is surgically inserted into the jawbone in the gap left by the missing tooth. The metal of a dental implant is usually titanium, which is considered biocompatible. Thus, the implant is unlikely to incite an allergic or immunological response.

Once a dental implant is placed, the jawbone and soft tissues around the implant heal. The healing process of the bone, which is called osseointegration, includes the fusion of the jawbone to the implanted metal.

After the implant has healed, a connector is added so that the implant can be topped with a dental crown. The healing of the connector wound usually takes a couple of weeks. After that time, the dental crown can be placed to complete the restoration of the single tooth.

The prosthetic tooth can be treated like any other teeth in the patient's mouth.

To Secure a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more teeth. The false teeth of the bridge are located in the center of the appliance, and a dental crown lies at each end of the bridge. The dental crowns affix the dental bridge in place within the mouth. If there are no natural teeth to which the dental crowns can be bonded, dental implants can be used. Once the dental bridge is properly attached to the dental implants, the bridge is considered a permanent or fixed appliance.

Overdentures

An overdenture is a type of denture that is connected to remaining natural teeth or dental implants to secure the denture into place. The appliance includes a connecting mechanism on its underside, which attaches to underlying implants or natural teeth.

The patient can still remove the overdenture by releasing the connector. When the patient decides to place the overdenture back into his or her mouth, the denture snaps into place.

To learn more about how a dental implant can be used for your tooth replacement, consult with a dentist in your area. He or she can assess your dental condition and determine whether or not a dental implant is a suitable option for you.
